1. Who we are
Unhinged Weather is operated in the United Kingdom. Questions about privacy can be sent to natasha.card@outlook.com.
2. You do not need an account
The app works without creating a user account, signing in, or providing your name. If you optionally add a preferred name, it is stored on your device and used only to personalise commentary from time to time.
3. Location
If you tap “Use my location”, the app asks for when-in-use location so it can show the forecast for where you are. We do not request always-on or background tracking, and we do not store a history of everywhere you have been.
You can refuse location permission and search for a town instead. Approximate or precise location may be used, depending on what your device provides.
When you search for a place, the search text is sent to the Open-Meteo geocoding service. If you use device location, a reverse lookup may be sent to OpenStreetMap Nominatim to turn coordinates into a place name.
4. Weather data
Forecasts are requested from Open-Meteo using the latitude and longitude of the place you selected. Official weather alerts, where available, may be fetched from the Met Office (United Kingdom) or the US National Weather Service. Those services receive the location needed to return a forecast or warning. We do not rewrite official warning text.
5. Information stored on your device
The app stores locally:
- your preferences, such as units, personality and humour level;
- saved locations you have chosen;
- a short cache of the latest forecast;
- recently shown commentary, so the same line is not repeated immediately;
- notification choices and purchase unlock status on this device.
Deleting the app removes this local information from the device.
6. Notifications
Notifications are off until you switch one on. If you do, the device may show rain, frost, morning forecast or official-warning alerts. These are scheduled on your device from the forecast already downloaded. We do not send marketing push messages.
7. Sharing
If you share a forecast card, the image or message may include a place name unless you hide it first. Once you share something, the recipient’s apps are outside our control.
8. Purchases
If you buy Unhinged Plus, Apple processes the payment. We do not receive your full card details. Apple may share a transaction status so the app can unlock Plus on that Apple Account.
9. This website
The website is hosted by Vercel. Hosting logs may include an IP address, browser type and the page requested, for security and reliability. We do not place advertising cookies on these pages.
10. Analytics
The app does not currently send your exact coordinates to an analytics product. If we add privacy-conscious analytics later (for example, whether onboarding was finished, or whether a widget was added), we will update this page. Exact user coordinates will not be logged in analytics.
11. Legal bases
Where UK data protection law applies, we rely on performance of a contract to provide the forecast you asked for, legitimate interests in operating and securing the service, consent where you grant location or notification permission, and legal obligations where they apply.
12. Your rights
Depending on the law that applies, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or a copy of personal information we hold, and you may object to certain processing. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
Because most app data lives on your device, deleting the app is the fastest way to remove it. For anything sent by email, contact us.
13. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13. Please contact us if you believe a child has provided personal information improperly.
14. Changes
We may update this policy when the app, providers or the law change. The latest version will stay on this page with its revision date.
